Dr. R. Michael Scott passed away on August 4, 2023. A revered neurosurgeon and researcher, Dr. Scott was a recognized authority on vascular malformations of the brain in pediatric patients, and a pioneer in the neurosurgical treatment of stroke in children. To our Boston Children’s and Harvard Medical School community, he was a caregiver with the greatest compassion, a trusted leader, and a teacher beyond compare.

As Neurosurgeon-in-Chief, Professor of Neurosurgery, and throughout his incredible career, Dr. Scott shaped the foundation of the field worldwide. He was honored with lifetime achievement awards from the Neurosurgical Society of America, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and The New England Neurosurgical Society, and — not surprisingly — the Silen Lifetime Achievement in Mentoring Award from HMS. As a testament to his work as a mentor, there are now 25 pediatric neurosurgery programs being led by physicians who trained with Dr. Scott.
